Bolivian High Plateau & Atacama Desert

The Bolivian High Plateau is known worldwide for its infinite Uyuni Salt Flat. It was the Incas trail. Last century, outlaws used this area to run away from North America to look for new opportunities and search for gold and silver. Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid were two famous outlaws who were bank robbers and whose story was made into a movie. This area is located in a subduction zone where two tectonic plates meet. Thus, the stunning scenery is dominated by massive active volcanoes, geysers and such peculiar lagoons like La Colorada (Red Lagoon) owing its reddish colour to red sediments and pigmentation of some algae that abound in the water and the La Verde (Green Lagoon) also rich in salts that turn into emerald green due to an emulsion caused by the wind. These impressive lagoons are located in the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve.

Atacama Desert is part of this great geological region in the North of Chile. San Pedro, which is its most picturesque town, is located in the north side of Atacama Salt Flat and halfway to the desert. San Pedro, which is such an authentic town, is not only known for its adobe architecture and dirt streets but also for the exotic Kunza Language spoken by native inhabitants.
